Retirement Destinations in Baja
Welcome to my blog | By Luis Acosta
Baja is known for being a sweet escape for anyone looking for pristine beaches, serenity and a slower way of living.
In this article we will review the top destinations to retire in baja, from the Pacific coast to the Sea of Cortez.
1- Todos Santos | Pacific Coast Side

If you are looking to retire soon, Todos Santos is one of the best places to be.
A slow paced town with great food, beaches for surfing and plenty of farm-to-table restaurants where you can enjoy life at its best.
For the last 20 years, all the pacific area has been developing, from Migriño, to Rancho Nuevo, Cerritos / Pescadero.
Cerritos is practically one of the two, "kind" of swimmable beaches in the pacific area.
Thanks to the naturally coveted break and amazing surf, these facts have attracted a lot of interest in the area in terms of investment.

Nice weather year round makes it the ideal spot for those living in Baja full time, ranging from 65F to 85F most of the time, which is nice even during summer days.
There are plenty of options for Real Estate, from empty lots to build your custom home, to luxury ocean view or oceanfront homes ready to move in.
And here you can view all the houses and condos for sale within the same area.
2- East Cape | The Sea of Cortez Side

The East Cape is a different place. Starting with access and location.
You have two ways to access the East Cape, the south, which is closer to San Jose del Cabo, and the North, which is located in the North-East.
Depending on where you are going, you will need to find the best route to get there.
At the East Cape you have few spots to choose from, and we will focus on the most developed areas, which are Los Barriles, Buenavista and La Ribera, the access to these areas are through the highway, if our starting point is the international airport, most of the areas in the East Cape are 1 hr away from it, but there are different roads that take you there and it could take you more or less depending you the road conditions since most of the East Cape is not paved.
But let's stick with the best retirement locations in The East Cape.

Los Barriles and Buenavista are the #1 destinations at the East Cape, the perfect swimmable beaches are the main reason that sun seekers chose this location.
With a calm and serene beach you practically have the ocean as a playground for any water activity that you can think of.
Do you like hiking? Windsurfing? Mountain biking? Fresh Seafood? Off-Roading? This is the place.
La Ribera is currently going under a massive phase of development with the new Costa Palmas, new marina, luxury resorts, private golf course, beachclub and practically any amenity that you can think of.

Being that said, the area is growing fast paced, the demand for housing is increasing and population will grow around 300% in the next 10 years.
COSTA PALMAS MASTER PLAN

For investment purposes, buying property in La Ribera is a great way to secure your money.
Great for retiring too, the beach is great, but if I had to choose between La Ribera and Los Barriles, I would go to Los Barriles with no hesitation.
3- La Paz | Sea of Cortez Side

The city of La Paz and capital of the state of Baja California Sur, hosts one of the most famous beaches in the world, Balandra, a place that its so amazing that you have to get up early and get on the line to get access to it, but believe me, it is worth it.

And if you get tired of that, you can drive 5 mins more to playa El Tecolote, when you get there the left side is the best, plenty of restaurants and the beach is also beautiful, no lines or waiting.

For those seeking their next home in La Paz, I can strongly recommend any area near downtown, even 4-5 blocks away from El Malecon is fine, but of course the closer to it, the better.

The city has everything you need, but as the capital of the state, it's bigger so there is more of everything, good and bad.
4- Los Cabos | Pacific Side
Los Cabos has 2 cities, San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, combined are Los Cabos and each of them have their own identity.
While Cabo San Lucas has always been the tourist destination of Baja, San Jose del Cabo is considered the other face of it with a more relaxed way of living in a more family oriented setting.

Both are great options to retire, one of the main things to consider when choosing a place for retirement are the amenities, my recommendation is that the more amenities the better, you´re not always going to be in the beach, or fancy restaurants, but you can pick one of the many private developments with the best amenities, this guarantees that you won't get bored, and if you rent your place when you're not here, your guest will never get bored and that will have a direct impact in your reviews as a host.
