The Ecological Sanctuary of San José del Cabo

As with every Saturday, I had planned a surf session + exploration in the East Cape. But once we left the highway and entered the dirt road, something rare happened: a sudden downpour had us blasting the wipers at full speed, while lightning crackled on the horizon. We turned back to San José del Cabo. The strong wind followed us into town, and with it, our hopes for good waves began to fade. Still, we decided to check out the waves at the San José estuary… And this is what I love about Baja — the surprises we find often have nothing to do with surfing, but everything to do with its community and the hidden treasures it holds.

Practically within the city, we reached the public parking lot at the edge of the estuary — one of the few areas that stays green year-round, buzzing with life. Knowing the waves wouldn’t be great, we took our time and wandered through this State Ecological Reserve, declared a Protected Natural Area since 1994. We walked among tall fan palms, surrounded by reeds and rushes springing from the water. Just a few steps in, the landscape turned bright yellow — a wetland plant whose tips change color — creating an unexpected welcome.

Suddenly, Mr. Aaron appeared, inviting us to visit his farm — another surprise you wouldn’t expect in what is essentially the middle of town. In addition to offering horseback rides on the beach, we got to pet and play with mini goats, rabbits, roosters, ducks, guinea fowl, and a group of dogs and cats who guard the place. Mr. Aaron is a local icon, someone who lives in harmony with the environment and gives amazing lessons on the importance of the estuary and its preservation. I’m more than happy to give a shout-out to his recreation center Bonanza Horseback Riding, which has already earned TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Award.

The waves! We had forgotten all about them. We followed a narrow trail through the estuary vegetation and emerged onto a wide beach painted with Cabo’s vibrant colors. A sign greeted us with information about the “Gallito Marino” — a bird in danger of extinction that nests on this beach. We read about the precautions we should take and learned that 217 species of water birds have been recorded here — 97 of which are migratory, and 19 are listed under some risk category. I remembered meeting Graciela, a researcher who has proven to be a tireless agent for environmental conservation. Another key figure in this community, helping create synergy with the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The estuary’s glowing yellow leaves are home to thousands of colorful dragonflies and ladybugs. We spent a good while photographing and observing this miniature world. We walked along the edge where the mangroves meet the sand until we reached the surf point. Flat. Not a single wave. But we didn’t mind. We simply kept exploring this incredible sanctuary: the Estuary of San José del Cabo.
